Tucson, AZ Family Dentist Answers: Why do baby teeth matter?

In a recent survey conducted by Contemporary Clinical Trials, nearly 1 in 5 parents surveyed admitted that they believed that baby teeth do not matter. However, this mindset could not be further from the truth. Although baby teeth are only around for a fraction of a person’s life, they serve an essential role in growth and development that sets children up for adulthood. Dr. Payam Asadi, a Family Dentist in Tucson, AZ, explains four unexpected reasons why healthy baby teeth are as important as adult teeth.

1. Supports Normal Breathing

Children will lose teeth throughout their childhood. But when they lose them too early due to extraction or congenital conditions, abnormal facial development may occur. In a study published by Breathing and Sleeping, researchers discovered that missing teeth in early childhood can interfere with facial development and narrow the upper airway. Over time, restricting the upperairway can lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and facial deformity.

Why does this happen? The alveolar bone (the bone that supports teeth) relies on the presence of tooth roots to create bone stimulation. When tooth roots are not present, the jawbone will not withstand everyday chewing forces and will gradually deteriorate.

2. Support Educational Acquisition

One of the main reasons children must visit their dentist every six months is to keep dental decay at bay, and untreated cavities can lead to dental pain. When a child suffers from a toothache, he or she may also have difficulty concentrating in class (which, in turn, affects learning). According to a study published by the American Public Health Association, children with dental pain were four times more likely to score lower than their peers with healthy teeth.

3. Help Children Maintain Good Nutrition

A well-rounded diet consists of a variety of vegetables, whole fruits, proteins, and more. Without strong teeth, it can be challenging to chew and consume a wide range of flavors, textures, and densities. Also, a limited diet can lead to more picky eating and may make it more difficult for children to meet their nutritional needs that support healthy growth and development.

4. Aid in Speech Development

Children often have a lot to say, so it’s safe to assume that parents want to empower children to communicate with peers, family members, and the world. Your child’s teeth, tongue, and lips work together to form sounds and words by manipulating airflow out of the mouth. Even though not all sounds rely on teeth, many do. A few missing teeth may lead to an articulation difference, but a child’s speech should be remotely clear.
