Dental Emergency in Tucson? How Same-Day Appointments Work
What counts as an emergency, what to do first, and how same-day visits work.
A cracked molar on a Saturday hike. A toothache that went from annoying to unbearable overnight. A crown that came off with a piece of caramel. Dental emergencies never schedule themselves politely, and the worst part is often not knowing what to do next. Here is exactly how it works when you call our Tucson office.
What counts as a dental emergency?
If you are asking whether your situation qualifies, it probably does. Call us the same day for any of these:
- Severe or worsening tooth pain, especially pain that wakes you up at night
- A knocked-out, cracked, or broken tooth
- Swelling in your gums, face, or jaw
- An abscess or a pimple-like bump on your gums
- A lost filling or crown that is causing pain
- Bleeding that does not stop
One important exception: if you have facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, or a fever with facial swelling, go to the emergency room first. That can indicate a spreading infection that needs immediate medical care.
What to do in the first hour
For a knocked-out adult tooth, time matters more than anything else. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. If it is clean, try gently placing it back in its socket. If that is not possible, put it in a small container of milk and call us immediately. Teeth replanted within the first hour have the best chance of survival.
For pain and swelling, a cold compress on the outside of your cheek and an over-the-counter pain reliever taken as directed can help while you get to us. One old remedy to avoid: never place aspirin directly against your gums, as it can burn the tissue.
In pain right now? We reserve time every day for emergencies.
(520) 293-9277 Call for a Same-Day VisitHow our same-day appointments work
Call us as early in the day as you can, describe what is happening, and our front desk will find you a time that day. When you arrive, we will take any imaging we need and one of our dentists will diagnose the problem and relieve the pain first.
Here is where being a practice with in-house specialists changes your experience. If your emergency turns out to need a root canal, our endodontist works in this same office. If a tooth cannot be saved and needs extraction or an implant plan, our surgical team is here too. At most offices, an emergency visit ends with a referral and another week of waiting. At ours, it usually ends with the problem treated.
Will insurance cover an emergency visit?
We are contracted with most dental insurance plans, and emergency exams and treatment are typically covered benefits. Our team will verify your coverage while you are being seen and explain any costs before treatment begins, so there are no surprises on top of a stressful day.
